Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, 6:06 p.m. Super Bowl thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Tommy Mooney...Jim Ferguson reporting from Hico, Texas, Pop. 683....I have never blogged before, so bear with me... We are all Dallas Cowboys fans here and are not even pretending to care about who wins or loses the game...I was just told that most of the 50 or 60 fans jammed into Ed "I'M Drunk Again" Pettit's house will be rooting for the Chicago Bears since they are the NFC champions...In about in minutes we will divide the group into shirts and skins and play some touch football until the game starts or someone gets something broken (and I'm not talking their feelings)....Ed "I was number 30 for the Dallas Cowboys" Pettit was my old high school football coach. He will spend most of the game telling us what plays he'd call if he was the head coach...Ed, how can you beat either the Bears and the Colts when you couldn't even manage to beat Lometa, Meridian or Dime Box, Texas...Lest you forget, we never won District!!!...They are choosing sides, now...Gotta go...Don't wanna be a skin...Saw a clip from a Friot Lay spot this morning on, get this, Face the Nation!.... Something about a giant Rat jumping through the wall. Looked funny. So far, Rats 1, Everybody else 0... Ferg out.
8:30 p.m. Ferg here reporting from Hico, Texas, home of Billy the Kid or so they say...Great game so far...The Shirts are beating the Skins 6-0...The party is going well. Coors is beating Budweiser 8 cases to 4 cases...I think Bud will come back big in the second half, since we are now out of Coors and wine coolers...The gals at the party loved the Budweiser dog commercial...lots of ohhs and ahhs...The guys are digging the Go-Daddy spot...lots OHHHHS AND AHHHHS....Personally, I like the Snickers spot...The coke spot with the animations was interesting but not enough to push two mechanics almost kissing for the lead...The “make your own” commercials were a disappointment...FL and Chevy should leave it to the pros next year...Bud seems to have a let’s-hit-people-in-the face theme going this year..A couple of the guys really hated the Chevy spot with the robot and cheered when it “jumped” off the bridge. But, then again, they are also missing fingers from farm accidents, and hate anything that resembles farm implements...So far, I think the game is more entertaining than than the spots...Gotta get back in my pickup and drive back into town to watch the second half...Ferg out.
11:23 p.m. I don’t know who I feel sorrier for, Rex Grossman or that old man washing the car in the Chevy “student” commercial...Come to think of it, I felt equally sorry for the entire cast in those Careersbuilders.com ads...Freeforming here: Favorite talking animals: the monkies in the Bud spot, followed :30 seconds later by the talking Lions...Favorite line from a commercial: “It’s a bottle opener” from another Bud spot...I was part of the creative team that did the Federline spot, or I would have said, “Federline, fries.” Oh, hell, I’ll say it anyway, favorite line, “Federline, fries.”...Glad to see Coca Cola back in the Big Game...The heart association spot was about as funny as a heart attack. First reaction from one of the “ladies” at the party, “Look he’s got a heart on”...The tiny weenies swimming in barbecue sauce was the hit of Ed Pettit Super Bowl party in Hico, Texas. If anyone is interested I’ll get the recipe and send it on...Thought the quarter in the soda machine was pretty cool...Didn’t see Ed “You gotta jiggle the handle” Pettit after the second Go-Daddy spot...Again, I thought Bud had the best overall showing by a client willing to shell out a boatload of dough...Congrats DDB...My favorite spot (and I won’t say Federline for Nationwide Insurance) was, drum roll, Snickers...Bottom line: No classics...Again, I wish clients would leave the making of commercials to the great agencies out there....Can’t wait to see what USAToday has to say in the morning...There’s only one problem, we don’t get USA Today in Hico, TX. Ferg out.

Your favorite? My least favorite. Not for any personal or religious beliefs, it was just a smarmy ad, bound to offend a large segment of the public, followed by gross yanking of chest hair as if that would make up for it. Ha, ha, ha. Snickers, indeed.

GM Spot seem strangely familiar to anyone? Upon seeing it, I immediately yelled Short Circuit. Here is the link to the scene.

Jim,
1) Does Texas have a local beer that has a regional loyalty that folks in Hico prefer to
the Yankee beers?
2) The youths at our apartment (definition:
aged 16-22) thought the Federline spot was
the best.

Tom
Our favorite beer in Texas is FREE beer. We do have some regional swell...Shiner, Lone Star and a couple of Mexican standouts..Modello and Two Xs. But far and away Bud for the men and Coors Light (and sissy coolers) for the chicks.
Just saw the USA Poll. Yikes! I didn't even have the Bud crabs in my top ten, muchless number one.
Best comment at the Ed "Is that cheese hot" Pettit's party came after the Snicker's spot: "What happens on Brokeback Mountain, Stays on Brokeback Mountain."

I'd like to hear more about Ed "I made Ferg the man he is today" Pettit. He seems like a "god" to me.

Ken,
It's a funny thing about Ed "Hey, Watch This" Pettit. Over 30 years ago, he was the Head coach of the Hico Fighting Tigers and my (tor)mentor. Now, he has become a good friend. I still have a hard time drinking a beer in front of him without thinking he'll make me do monkey rolls. Let's just say I have an authority complex and he made my life a living hell for three years. Although we were never champions of nothing, he instilled a lot of pride in a bunch of unruly country boys who once painted his dog Blue, blue.
