Overall, not a great day, I thought. But then, I eschewed my usual party of most lawyers who love watching the ads and instead went to a place where people talked through the ads and, come to think of it, didn’t watch the game either. It was a depressing environment for a media buyer, I’ll tell you. People talking over punch lines as the media dollar ticker spun to a blur.
My 24-year-old daughter called me halfway through and told me she’d been to two parties where people were simply slapping the shit out of each other. So I guess the Bud Light thing was a hit (I liked it too, but didn’t slap anyone). Prior to this market research, I liked the Snickers Brokeback Mountain thing, although it evoked howls of disapproval from the sometimes-watching crowd. I love that Coke parody of Grand Theft Auto, but I’ve seen it before. (Silverstein inexplicably likes that one that goes inside the vending machine. Does nothing for me.) After hearing how bad the K-Fed thing was going to be, I found myself liking it, actually. I feel for the guy, being Mr. Spears and all that, and this was a way to deal with it.
The Bud ads are always a barometer of how things went. A decent crop, but no new ground. Besides the slapping, I liked the axe-wielding hitchhiker and the immigrants asking for Bud Light. I know people like my mom will love that fake dalmation spot, but I thought it was predictible and saccharine. Same for the rock thing that led the Bowl off -- saw something like that coming, but my mom didn’t, I’m sure. It’s similar to that cell phone protection device spot we’ve been passing around, don’t you think? (Whose? Don’t remember.)
Dumb friends have liked the nude car washing spot. Not me. Only other mentionable was the thing about the end of the NFL season because, if you’re a fan, it’s so so true. (I heard that was a “fan generated” ad, but Pytka shot it -- what’s that about?)
It’s a long way to the day the pitchers report. Pray for me between now and then.

Jeff,
You mentioned the NFL fan generated spot. Just saw Pytka's :60 and :30 second cuts. They are classic Pytka...gorgeous with each vignette telling a nice story. The NFL should be flagged and penalized 15 yards for their "personal foul" for what they did to Joe and the fan that generated the spot. Hopefully, Joe's cuts will wind up on the internet somehow, somewhere.

Good wrap up. I too, liked the coke spot - a la 'grand theft'. A few of the bud spots made my group howl, must have been the slaps. I was busy making pizzas for all of them! BTW, have not seen you since the roast at Slim's oh so many years ago Jeff.
